New Studio!

Well folks I’m back. I truly apologize for not posting more often. I’ve gotten a few freelance projects done since Jungle Gym and will post about them, but I honestly was hard pressed for time due to being asked to teach 14 classes in a row over the summer. Needless to say, not a lot got done. (Other than hundreds of impressionable youth learning awesome skills 😉 )

So until recently, I’ve been doing the majority of my work in the room I share with my brother. Now, I’m not the kind of person that can concentrate easily at home. I need to have separation of work space/ living space in a bad way. Not to mention my brother gets woken up / annoyed whenever I get up early and turn the computer on. I looked around at some offices to rent near my house but they were out of my budget. I was desperate though and needed ANY solution that would get me out of the house.

Then I realized there was ample space in our shop across the property, so I drew up some plans, bought a bunch of supplies and set to work building myself a studio. Much cheaper in the long run, I can have work/living separation, and its close to home. Here are some photos of the process:

The floor-plan sure took a beating!

Time for the electrical stuff!

My dad was really helpful and did most of the wiring as he has a lot of experience at it

Putting in the last screw. Gawd this felt good.

Found a nice, thick, real-wood door at Habitat for Humanity. It was like 25 bucks. This one needed a hole drilled but most others didn’t. Go there for all your building needs.

Now the fun part; filling the space with awesome shit!

And that’s it folks. I admittedly slacked off too much and it took me a little more than a month to get it all complete. It could have easily taken me 2 weeks or less if I had known what I was doing but now that I’ve gotten over this hurdle I can finally get back to doing what I love — making content!

I learned a lot about construction over this month. My goal for this studio is to be in here as long as it takes for me to be able to afford to rent a bigger one in the city where other folks can join. Remember, if you really want something, there are no excuses. Find a way around and over the hurdles and walls that pop up on the path towards that goal.
